RAIDyhdistelmän

RAIDyhdistelmän, or RAID combination, refers to the practice of implementing multiple RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) levels within a single storage system to leverage the advantages of different RAID configurations. This approach aims to achieve a balance between performance, redundancy, and cost-effectiveness that a single RAID level might not offer.

A common example of a RAIDyhdistelmän is nested RAID, where one RAID array is built upon another. For instance, RAID 10 (or RAID 1+0) is a combination of RAID 1 (mirroring) and RAID 0 (striping). In this setup, data is first mirrored onto pairs of disks (RAID 1), and then these mirrored pairs are striped together (RAID 0). This provides the fault tolerance of mirroring and the performance benefits of striping. Another nested RAID configuration is RAID 01 (or RAID 0+1), which stripes data across multiple RAID 1 mirror sets. While offering good read performance, it has a lower fault tolerance than RAID 10.

Beyond nested RAID, RAIDyhdistelmän can also involve using different RAID levels for different purposes within a larger storage infrastructure. For example, a high-performance application server might utilize RAID 0 for scratch disks and RAID 10 for its operating system and critical data. Storage arrays can also present different RAID volumes to various servers based on their specific needs, effectively creating a combined RAID environment.

The primary goal of employing a RAIDyhdistelmän is to tailor storage solutions to precise requirements. By carefully selecting and combining RAID levels, administrators can optimize for factors such as data access speed, protection against drive failures, and overall storage capacity utilization, all while managing budget constraints.
