RAID, which stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple physical disk drives into one or more logical units for the purposes of data redundancy, performance improvement, or both.

There are several RAID levels, each offering different trade-offs. RAID 0, also known as striping, offers improved performance by distributing data across multiple disks without any redundancy. This means if one drive fails, all data is lost. RAID 1, or mirroring, duplicates data across two or more disks, providing high redundancy but at the cost of usable storage capacity. RAID 5 uses block-level striping with distributed parity, offering a balance between performance, redundancy, and storage efficiency. It requires at least three drives. RAID 6 is similar to RAID 5 but includes an additional parity block, allowing it to withstand two drive failures. RAID 10 combines mirroring and striping, offering both high performance and redundancy, but it is more expensive due to the requirement of at least four drives and the loss of half the total disk capacity for mirroring.
