RAID, an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a data storage technology that combines multiple physical disk drives into one or more logical units. This combination serves purposes such as data redundancy, performance improvement, or both. Different RAID levels exist, each offering a unique balance of these features.

RAID 0, also known as striping, distributes data across multiple disks without any redundancy. This provides a significant performance boost as data can be read from or written to multiple drives simultaneously. However, if any single drive in a RAID 0 array fails, all data is lost.

RAID 1, or mirroring, writes identical data to two or more drives. This offers excellent data redundancy, as the data can be retrieved from a mirrored drive if one fails. The performance improvement is typically less pronounced than RAID 0, especially for writes, as data must be written to all mirrored drives.

RAID 5 and RAID 6 incorporate parity information distributed across the drives. RAID 5 uses single parity, allowing for the failure of one drive, while RAID 6 uses double parity, tolerating the failure of two drives. These levels offer a good compromise between performance, capacity, and redundancy.

Other RAID levels, such as RAID 10 (a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0), exist, offering more advanced configurations tailored to specific needs. The choice of RAID level depends on the user's priorities regarding data protection, speed, and cost. Implementing RAID requires a hardware controller or software configuration to manage the array.
