R2methylbutanol

R2methylbutanol, also known as 2-methylbutan-2-ol or tert-amyl alcohol, is a branched chain alcohol with the chemical formula C5H12O. It is a tertiary alcohol, meaning the carbon atom bonded to the hydroxyl group is attached to three other carbon atoms. At room temperature, R2methylbutanol is a colorless liquid with a camphor-like odor. It is miscible with ethanol and diethyl ether but only slightly soluble in water.

R2methylbutanol is produced industrially primarily through the hydration of 2-methyl-2-butene or 2-methyl-1-butene, which are themselves derived from petroleum refining processes. It can also be synthesized through Grignard reactions.

This compound finds various applications. It is used as a solvent for resins, lacquers, and oils. Due to its moderate volatility and solvency, it is employed in the formulation of certain paints, varnishes, and cleaning agents. R2methylbutanol also serves as an intermediate in the synthesis of other organic chemicals, including pharmaceuticals and fragrances. In some laboratory settings, it has been used as a co-solvent or denaturant. Historically, it was used as a hypnotic and sedative, but this use has largely been discontinued due to safety concerns and the availability of more effective alternatives.
