Röntgenkuviot, also known as X-ray diffraction patterns, are the characteristic arrangements of spots or rings produced when X-rays interact with a crystalline material. This phenomenon, based on the principle of diffraction, occurs because the X-rays are scattered by the regularly spaced atoms within the crystal lattice. The specific pattern generated is unique to the crystal structure and the wavelength of the X-rays used, acting as a fingerprint for the material.

The process involves directing a beam of monochromatic X-rays onto a sample of the crystalline material. As the X-rays pass through or reflect off the sample, they are diffracted in various directions according to Bragg's Law, which relates the angle of diffraction to the spacing between atomic planes in the crystal and the wavelength of the X-rays. Detectors are then used to record the intensity of the diffracted X-rays at different angles, creating the röntgenkuvio.
