Quintozene
Quintozene, also known as pentachloronitrobenzene or PCNB, is an organochlorine compound. It was widely used as a fungicide and seed treatment in agriculture from the mid-20th century until its use was restricted or banned in many countries due to environmental and health concerns. Quintozene was effective against a range of soil-borne fungal diseases, including clubroot in brassicas and damping-off in seedlings.
Its chemical structure consists of a benzene ring with five chlorine atoms and one nitro group attached.
Concerns regarding quintozene's persistence in the environment and potential toxicity led to its phasing out. It
