Qeqqata

Qeqqata is a municipality in southwestern Greenland. It was established on January 1, 2009, as part of a major municipal reform in Greenland. The municipality's name, Qeqqata, means "the center" in the Greenlandic language, reflecting its geographical location in the western part of the country. Its administrative center is located in Sisimiut, which is also the second-largest city in Greenland.

The municipality encompasses a vast area characterized by a rugged coastline, fjords, and ice caps. The population is concentrated in several settlements, with Sisimiut being the most populous. Other significant settlements include Maniitsoq, Kangaatsiaq, and Aasiaat, though Aasiaat is now part of the Qaasuitsup municipality. The economy of Qeqqata is largely based on fishing, particularly shrimp and halibut, as well as hunting and tourism. The natural beauty of the region attracts visitors for activities such as hiking, dog sledding, and whale watching. The municipality faces challenges related to climate change, including the impact on wildlife and traditional livelihoods. Qeqqata is also a significant hub for transportation, with Sisimiut serving as an important port and airport.
