Püstistes

Püstistes, also known as Pustites, were a group of ancient Germanic tribes who inhabited the region of Pannonia in the 1st century AD. Their name is derived from the Latin word "pustis," which means "rustic" or "peasant." The Püstistes are first mentioned in the works of the Roman historian Tacitus, who described them as a tribe that lived in the northern part of Pannonia, near the Danube River.

The Püstistes were part of the larger confederation of tribes known as the Quadi, which also included the Marcomanni and the Iazyges. This confederation was notable for its military prowess and its frequent conflicts with the Roman Empire. The Püstistes, like other Quadi tribes, were known for their horsemanship and their use of composite bows, which were highly effective in battle.

The Püstistes, along with other Quadi tribes, played a significant role in the Marcomannic Wars, a series of conflicts between the Roman Empire and the Quadi confederation that took place from 166 to 180 AD. These wars were marked by their intensity and the significant losses suffered by both sides. The Püstistes, along with other Quadi tribes, were eventually defeated by the Roman Empire, and their lands were incorporated into the Roman province of Pannonia.

The Püstistes are not mentioned in historical records after the Marcomannic Wars, and their fate remains uncertain. However, their legacy as a formidable Germanic tribe is preserved in the annals of Roman history.
