Pörssivaihtoehtoja, or stock options in English, are financial contracts that give the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset, such as a stock, at a specific price on or before a certain date. There are two main types of stock options: call options and put options. A call option gives the holder the right to buy the underlying asset, while a put option gives the holder the right to sell it. The price at which the option can be exercised is called the strike price, and the date by which it must be exercised is known as the expiration date.

Investors use stock options for various reasons, including speculation on price movements, hedging against potential losses in their existing portfolios, or generating income. For example, an investor who believes a stock's price will rise might buy a call option. If the stock price increases above the strike price before expiration, the investor can exercise the option to buy the stock at a lower price and potentially sell it immediately at the higher market price for a profit. Conversely, an investor who expects a stock price to fall might buy a put option.

Options trading involves significant risk, and it is possible to lose the entire premium paid for the option if it expires worthless. The value of an option is influenced by several factors, including the underlying asset's price, the strike price, the time to expiration, volatility of the underlying asset, and interest rates. Due to their complexity and leverage, options are generally considered suitable for experienced investors who understand the associated risks.
