Pölyemissiot, also known as dust emissions, refer to the release of fine solid particles into the atmosphere. These particles can originate from a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources. Natural sources include wind erosion of soil and deserts, volcanic eruptions, and forest fires. Anthropogenic sources are more varied and are often associated with industrial activities, construction, agriculture, and transportation.

In industrial settings, processes such as mining, quarrying, cement production, and metal processing can generate significant amounts of dust. Construction sites are a common source, with activities like demolition, excavation, and material handling releasing dust into the surrounding environment. Agricultural practices, including plowing, harvesting, and the use of fertilizers, can also contribute to dust emissions, particularly in dry regions. Vehicle traffic on unpaved roads or the resuspension of dust from road surfaces by moving vehicles are another notable source.

The composition of dust emissions varies greatly depending on the source. It can include mineral particles, organic matter, soot, and metals. The size of these particles is a critical factor, as smaller particles (less than 10 micrometers in diameter, known as PM10, and even smaller, less than 2.5 micrometers, known as PM2.5) can be inhaled and have adverse effects on human health, impacting respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Dust emissions can also affect air quality, visibility, and contribute to environmental issues like soil erosion and sedimentation. Monitoring and controlling dust emissions are important for public health and environmental protection, often through the use of dust suppression techniques and emission control technologies.
