Põlvejoont, also known as the patellar tendon, is a strong band of connective tissue that connects the quadriceps muscle in the thigh to the patella, or kneecap. Its primary function is to transmit the force generated by the quadriceps muscle to the patella, which then transfers it to the tibia, or shinbone, during activities such as walking, running, and jumping. The patellar tendon plays a crucial role in knee stability and is essential for proper knee function.

The patellar tendon is located on the front of the knee, running from the quadriceps muscle to the patella. It is surrounded by a sheath of tissue called the patellar bursa, which helps to reduce friction between the tendon and the surrounding structures. The patellar tendon is also supported by the patellar ligament, which connects the patella to the tibia.

Injuries to the patellar tendon, such as strains or tears, are common and can occur due to overuse, sudden impact, or repetitive stress. Symptoms of patellar tendon injury may include pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg. Treatment options for patellar tendon injuries range from rest and ice to more invasive procedures such as surgery, depending on the severity of the injury.

Proper warm-up and stretching exercises, as well as maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding activities that put excessive stress on the knee, can help prevent patellar tendon injuries. Additionally, wearing appropriate footwear and using knee supports can provide added protection and support to the knee joint.
