Pågripelsen

Pågripelsen is a Swedish term that translates to "the arrest" or "the apprehension" in English. It refers to the legal act of taking a person into custody by authority of law. In the Swedish legal system, a pågripelse can be carried out by a police officer or other authorized personnel when there is probable cause to believe that a person has committed a crime.

The purpose of a pågripelse is typically to prevent further criminal activity, to secure evidence, or to bring the suspect before a judge or prosecutor for further investigation. The legality of a pågripelse is governed by Swedish law, primarily the Code of Procedure (Rättegångsbalken). A person who is pågripet has certain rights, including the right to be informed of the reason for their arrest and the right to legal counsel.

Following a pågripelse, the individual may be detained (anhållen) by a prosecutor, which is a formal decision to keep the person in custody while the investigation continues. If the prosecutor decides to continue holding the suspect, a request for further detention (häktning) must be made to a court. The distinction between pågripelse, anhållande, and häktning is important within the Swedish legal framework. A pågripelse is the initial act of taking someone into custody, while anhållande and häktning involve further legal decisions to extend that custody.
