Päättelymoottoreita, or inference engines, are a core component of artificial intelligence and expert systems. Their primary function is to derive conclusions from facts and rules stored in a knowledge base. There are two main types of inference engines: forward-chaining and backward-chaining. Forward-chaining, also known as data-driven reasoning, starts with available data and applies rules to derive new facts until a desired goal is reached or no new conclusions can be made. It is often used for monitoring and control systems. Backward-chaining, or goal-driven reasoning, begins with a hypothesis or goal and works backward to find supporting facts and rules. This method is typically used in diagnostic systems and question-answering applications.

Inference engines operate by matching patterns in the input data against the rules in the knowledge base. When a match is found, the corresponding action or conclusion specified by the rule is executed. This process is repeated iteratively. The efficiency and effectiveness of an inference engine depend heavily on the structure and completeness of the knowledge base, as well as the sophistication of its reasoning algorithms. They are fundamental to many AI applications, including medical diagnosis, financial analysis, and complex problem-solving.
