Päästöarviointi, or emissions assessment, is the process of estimating and quantifying the release of pollutants into the environment. This can encompass various media, including air, water, and soil, and a wide range of substances such as greenhouse gases, particulate matter, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds. The primary goal of emissions assessment is to understand the sources and magnitude of pollution, which is crucial for environmental management, policy development, and impact analysis.

The methodology for emissions assessment varies depending on the pollutant and the source. It can involve direct measurements using monitoring equipment, calculations based on activity data and emission factors, or modeling techniques. Emission factors represent the rate at which a pollutant is released from a specific source or activity. For example, an emission factor for a particular type of vehicle might quantify the grams of carbon monoxide emitted per kilometer driven. Activity data, such as the total distance driven by that type of vehicle in a region, is then multiplied by the emission factor to estimate total emissions.

Emissions assessments are vital for tracking progress towards environmental targets, such as those related to climate change mitigation or air quality improvement.
