Pääsektoreita, meaning "main sectors" in Finnish, refers to the primary divisions within an economy. These sectors are typically categorized based on the type of economic activity involved. The most common classification includes three main sectors: the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors.

The primary sector encompasses activities related to the extraction and production of raw materials directly from the earth. This includes agriculture, fishing, forestry, and mining. Its output forms the basic inputs for other sectors.

The secondary sector involves the transformation of raw materials into manufactured goods. This is the industrial sector, encompassing manufacturing, construction, and processing industries. It adds value by converting primary products into more usable forms.

The tertiary sector, also known as the service sector, focuses on providing services rather than tangible goods. This broad category includes a wide range of activities such as retail, transportation, education, healthcare, finance, and tourism.

In some economic analyses, a fourth and fifth sector are also identified. The quaternary sector comprises knowledge-based activities like research and development, information technology, and consulting. The quinary sector, often seen as a subset of the quaternary or tertiary sector, includes high-level decision-making and management roles, such as top executives and government officials. Understanding these sectors is crucial for analyzing economic structure, employment patterns, and development.
