Pääreseptori

Pääreseptori, in Finnish biology, refers to the primary receptor in a signaling pathway that detects a specific ligand and initiates a cellular response. The concept is central to receptor–ligand interactions and signal transduction. While pääreseptori commonly denotes a cell-surface receptor, intracellular receptors that respond to steroids or thyroid hormones are included in the broader sense when appropriate.

Receptors are categorized by their mechanism of signal initiation. Major classes include G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), ligand-gated ion channels, and intracellular (nuclear) receptors. Upon ligand binding, GPCRs activate heterotrimeric G proteins; RTKs typically undergo dimerization and autophosphorylation; ligand-gated channels open to permit ion flow; and nuclear receptors regulate gene transcription after ligand binding and recruitment of coactivators.

Downstream signaling often involves second messengers such as cyclic AMP, IP3/DAG, and Ca2+, or kinase cascades like MAPK and PI3K-Akt. The function of a pääreseptori is modulated by regulatory processes including desensitization and downregulation (phosphorylation, internalization, degradation) and by upregulation through increased expression or alternative splicing.

Pääreseptorit are frequent drug targets due to their central role in physiology and disease. Examples include beta-adrenergic receptors (GPCRs) targeted by beta-blockers, insulin receptors (RTKs), and epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs). In Finnish scientific usage, the term highlights the receptor’s pivotal role within a given signaling axis, often used alongside the broader class name to specify the primary binding partner for a ligand.
