Pärasoolt

Pärasoolt, also known as the rectum, is the final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus. It is approximately 15 centimeters (6 inches) long in adults and serves as a temporary storage site for feces before defecation. The rectal wall contains several layers, including mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa. The mucosa is folded into longitudinal ridges called rectal columns, which help support the passage of stool.

The primary function of the pärasoolt is to hold feces until they are eliminated from the body. As feces accumulate, the rectal walls distend, triggering nerve signals that signal the urge to defecate. The rectal muscles then contract, and the anal sphincters relax to allow for the passage of stool. The pärasoolt also plays a role in water absorption, though to a lesser extent than the preceding colon.

Conditions affecting the pärasoolt can include inflammation (proctitis), hemorrhoids (swollen veins), fissures (tears), and cancer. These conditions can cause symptoms such as pain, bleeding, and changes in bowel habits. Medical examination of the pärasoolt is often performed using a digital rectal exam or a procedure called proctoscopy.
