Pyyntömuotoja refers to the various grammatical constructions used in Finnish to express requests. These forms allow speakers to politely and effectively ask for something to be done or given. The simplest and most direct way to make a request is often by using the imperative mood of a verb. For example, "Anna kirja" (Give the book) is a direct request. However, in many situations, more nuanced and polite forms are preferred.

A common and polite way to form requests is by using the conditional mood. This softens the request considerably. For instance, "Voisitko antaa kirjan?" (Could you give the book?) is a much more polite way to ask than the imperative. Another common construction involves using the verb "pyytää" (to ask) followed by an infinitive or a subordinate clause. Examples include "Pyydän sinua antamaan kirjan" (I ask you to give the book) or "Pyydän, että annat kirjan" (I ask that you give the book).

Indirect requests can also be formed by using questions that imply a desire for something. For example, "Onko sinulla lainata kynää?" (Do you have a pen to lend?) is an indirect request for a pen. The choice of pyyntömuoto depends heavily on the context, the relationship between the speakers, and the desired level of politeness. Understanding these different forms is crucial for effective communication in Finnish.
