Pythonsuchus

Pythonsuchus is an extinct genus of crocodyliform reptiles known from fragmentary fossil material. The fossils attributed to Pythonsuchus date to the Mesozoic era, but precise dating and locality remain debated in the literature. The holotype material is limited, consisting mainly of partial cranial elements and some postcranial bones, which constrains detailed anatomical reconstruction.

Although the full anatomy is poorly known, Pythonsuchus is generally considered to be a crocodyliform, and its most certain placement is within Crocodyliformes. However, its exact relationships within the group are unresolved; some analyses have recovered it as a basal notosuchian-like form, while others place it more basal or as a stem crocodylomorph. This uncertainty reflects the limited material and convergent features among early crocodyiforms.

The etymology of the name Pythonsuchus reflects the common practice of combining a Greek root with suchus, literally "python crocodile," though the name does not imply any direct morphological similarity to pythons. The genus contributes to understanding the diversity and early evolution of crocodyliform reptiles during the Mesozoic.

Due to the fragmentary remains, Pythonsuchus remains poorly known, and new fossil material would be necessary to clarify its anatomy, age, and phylogenetic position.
