Pylväsradiaattoreita, often translated as column radiators, are a type of central heating radiator distinguished by their vertical, multi-column design. Unlike traditional flat panel radiators or convector radiators, column radiators consist of several vertical tubes or columns joined together. This construction provides a large surface area, which is highly effective for radiating heat into a room.

The design of column radiators can vary. They can be found with two, three, four, or even more columns arranged side-by-side. The height of the columns also varies, allowing them to be fitted into different spaces, from low-level installations under windows to full-height units that can serve as a significant design element. The materials used are typically steel or cast iron, with steel being more common in modern manufacturing due to its lighter weight and cost-effectiveness. Cast iron versions are known for their durability and excellent heat retention.

Column radiators offer a combination of radiant and convective heat. The large surface area directly radiates heat into the room, creating a comfortable and even temperature. They also heat the air that passes between the columns, providing a convective element. Their aesthetic is often considered more traditional or industrial, making them a popular choice for period properties, loft conversions, or spaces where a more vintage or robust look is desired. Despite their appearance, they are an efficient heating solution when properly sized and installed.
