Pushung

Pushung refers to a traditional Korean method of dyeing fabric. It is a form of resist dyeing where patterns are created by applying a paste to the fabric before it is immersed in dye. The paste, typically made from rice flour and other natural ingredients, acts as a barrier, preventing the dye from reaching the areas it covers. Once the dyeing process is complete, the paste is washed away, revealing the un-dyed pattern against the colored background.

The origins of pushung are believed to date back to the Three Kingdoms period of Korea, with evidence found in ancient tombs. It was a popular technique for creating intricate designs on clothing, banners, and other textiles. The complexity of the patterns often depended on the skill of the artisan and the amount of time dedicated to the process. Different colors could be achieved by repeatedly dyeing the fabric with various natural dyes.
