Pushtimit

Pushtimit is an Albanian noun meaning the act of occupying or conquering territory by a foreign power. It is derived from the verb pushtoj, which means to seize, occupy, or conquer, and the noun-form pushtim; the definite form pushtimi appears in phrases such as pushtimi i një territori, meaning the occupation of a territory. The form pushtimit is used in grammar to indicate definiteness or possession in related constructions.

In historical contexts, pushtimit refers to military conquest and subsequent governance of a region by an external authority. It is commonly used in discussions of Balkan and European history to describe periods when foreign powers controlled Albanian lands or neighboring areas. Notable examples include the long process of Ottoman expansion into the Balkans, which is described in Albanian historiography as a series of pushtime that reshaped political and social life in the region. In the 20th century, Albania experienced occupations during World War II, with Italian occupation followed by German occupation enabling external control over the territory.
