The concept emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of the broader Finnish national revival (*Suomen kansallinen heräily*), which sought to strengthen Finnish language and culture against Swedish influence and to foster a distinct Finnish national identity.

The movement emphasized the purity of the Finnish language, advocating for the use of native words and avoiding loanwords from Swedish, German, or other languages. This linguistic purism was not merely about vocabulary but also extended to grammar, pronunciation, and even the development of new terms to replace foreign ones. Notable figures in this effort included scholars like Elias Lönnrot, the compiler of the *Kalevala*, and linguist Matti Paasivaara, who contributed to the standardization of Finnish orthography and vocabulary.
