Pumpearten refers to the classification of pumps based on their operating principles and applications. The primary categories are dynamic pumps and positive displacement pumps. Dynamic pumps, also known as rotodynamic pumps, increase fluid velocity through an impeller and then convert this velocity into pressure. Common examples include centrifugal pumps, where the fluid is thrown outwards by a rotating impeller, and axial flow pumps, which move fluid parallel to the pump shaft. These are widely used for high-flow, low-pressure applications like water supply and circulation systems.

Positive displacement pumps, on the other hand, move a fixed amount of fluid with each cycle or rotation. They trap a volume of fluid and force it into the discharge pipe. This category includes reciprocating pumps, such as piston pumps and diaphragm pumps, which use a back-and-forth motion. Rotary pumps, another type of positive displacement pump, utilize rotating elements like gears, screws, or lobes to move the fluid. These pumps are ideal for applications requiring precise flow control, high pressures, or the handling of viscous fluids. The choice between these fundamental pump types depends heavily on the specific requirements of the fluid being handled, the desired flow rate, and the necessary discharge pressure.
