This limiting element is termed the "bottleneck." The performance of the entire system is dictated by the rate at which the bottleneck can process work.

Identifying bottlenecks is crucial for improving efficiency. Common methods for identification include observation, data analysis of processing times at each stage, and simulation. Once identified, the focus of improvement efforts shifts to addressing the bottleneck. Strategies can involve increasing the capacity of the bottleneck, optimizing its processes, or even eliminating it altogether if possible.

The theory of constraints, a management philosophy developed by Eliyahu M. Goldratt, places a strong emphasis on managing bottlenecks. It posits that in any system, there is at least one bottleneck that constrains the system's performance. By managing and elevating the bottleneck, the overall system performance can be dramatically improved. The five focusing steps of the theory of constraints are: identify the constraint, exploit the constraint, subordinate everything else to the constraint, elevate the constraint, and if the constraint is broken, go back to step 1.
