Puhvergaasid

Puhvergaasid, also known as perovskites, are a class of materials with the general chemical formula ABX3, where A is a large cation, B is a transition metal, and X is an anion. They are named after the Russian mineralogist Lev Puhver, who first described them in 1926. Puhvergaasid are notable for their unique crystal structure, which consists of corner-sharing BX6 octahedra and AXn polyhedra. This structure allows for a wide range of chemical compositions and physical properties.

The most well-known puhvergaasid are calcium titanium oxide (CaTiO3) and strontium titanium oxide (SrTiO3). These materials have been extensively studied due to their potential applications in various fields, including electronics, optics, and energy conversion. For example, SrTiO3 is a popular substrate for growing thin films of other materials, such as high-temperature superconductors, due to its high dielectric constant and lattice match with many other materials.

Puhvergaasid are also of interest in the field of solid-state ionics, where they can act as electrolytes or solid-state batteries. Their high ionic conductivity and stability make them promising candidates for applications in fuel cells and sensors. Additionally, puhvergaasid exhibit interesting optical properties, such as strong luminescence and nonlinear optical effects, which can be harnessed for applications in lasers and optical communication.

Despite their potential, the synthesis and processing of puhvergaasid can be challenging due to their sensitivity to impurities and the need for high temperatures.
