Puhdistamo

Puhdistamo is a Finnish term used for a facility that removes impurities from a substance to meet environmental, health, or product-quality standards. The word is broad and can refer to various purification facilities, including wastewater treatment plants (jätevesien puhdistamo), drinking water treatment setups, or industrial purification installations. The concept is common in municipal and industrial contexts in Finland and other countries with Finnish-language usage.

The most widespread use of the term refers to wastewater treatment plants, which handle municipal or industrial effluents. Such plants aim to remove organic matter, nutrients, solids, and pathogens from wastewater so that the treated water can be discharged safely or reused. Industrial puhdistamot may target specific contaminants and employ specialized treatment trains to meet process or environmental requirements.

Typical processes in water-focused puhdisamot include preliminary screening and grit removal, primary sedimentation, biological treatment (such as activated sludge or biofilm reactors), secondary clarification, and disinfection. Advanced or tertiary treatments may involve filtration, chemical precipitation, membrane technologies, nutrient removal, and sometimes ultraviolet or chemical disinfection. Sludge generated during treatment is stabilized, thickened, and treated (for example by digestion) before disposal or reuse.

In addition to liquid purification, the term can also describe air or gas purification installations that remove dust, odors, or hazardous substances through filtration, adsorption, scrubbing, or other remediation methods. Across its meanings, a puhdistamo is designed to reduce environmental impact, improve safety and public health, and enable compliance with regulatory standards.
