Pucciniomycotina

Pucciniomycotina is a subphylum of Basidiomycota, one of the major lineages of club fungi. It includes a diversity of fungi that are predominantly plant parasites, most notably the rust fungi of the order Pucciniales. The group also contains several related lineages that are primarily biotrophic on living plant tissue. Rusts are economically important due to their impact on crops and forests.

Biology and life cycles: Members are largely obligate biotrophs, obtaining nutrients from living hosts and rarely causing rapid host death. They typically have complex life cycles that may involve multiple hosts and several spore types. In many rusts, life stages include urediniospores for repeated infection, teliospores for overwintering, and basidiospores, with some lineages also producing aeciospores and, in rare cases, spermatia. Haustoria form within host tissues to absorb nutrients.

Ecology and impact: Rust fungi infect a wide range of plants, including major crops such as wheat and oats, and various tree species. They can cause leaf spots, reduced yields, and dieback, contributing to economic losses in agriculture and forestry. Management relies on resistant cultivars, crop rotation, and fungicidal strategies in some cases.

Taxonomy and phylogeny: Pucciniomycotina is one of three Basidiomycota subphyla, alongside Ustilaginomycotina and Agaricomycotina. The subphylum comprises multiple orders and families, with Pucciniales (rusts) as its largest and best-studied group. Molecular studies support Pucciniomycotina as a distinct lineage within Basidiomycota, although the internal relationships among its constituent groups remain under active investigation.
