Psykologilingvistiikka, also known as psycholinguistics, is a field that bridges psychology and linguistics. It investigates the psychological and neurobiological factors that enable humans to acquire, use, comprehend, and produce language. Psycholinguistics explores how the mind processes language, including aspects like speech perception, language acquisition in children, the relationship between language and thought, and the neural underpinnings of language.

Key areas of study within psycholinguistics include the mental lexicon, which is the mental dictionary containing our knowledge of words, their meanings, pronunciations, and grammatical properties. Researchers also examine sentence processing, how we understand grammatical structures and derive meaning from sentences. Language acquisition, a central theme, focuses on how infants and children learn their native language(s) and how adults learn second languages. Furthermore, psycholinguistics investigates language disorders, such as aphasia, to understand how brain damage affects language abilities and to shed light on normal language processing. The field also considers the influence of cognitive processes like memory, attention, and perception on language. By employing various experimental methods, including behavioral studies, neuroimaging techniques (like fMRI and EEG), and computational modeling, psycholinguistics aims to unravel the complexities of the human language faculty.
