Psychopompic

Psychopompic refers to the concept of guiding or escorting spirits, particularly those of the deceased, between the living world and the afterlife. The term originates from the Greek words *psyche*, meaning "soul," and *pompe*, meaning "journey" or "procession." Psychopompism is a cultural and mythological practice found across various traditions, where specific figures, deities, or rituals facilitate the safe passage of souls.

In many ancient and indigenous belief systems, psychopompic figures serve as intermediaries between the living and the dead. For example, in Egyptian mythology, Anubis was associated with guiding souls to the underworld, while in Norse tradition, Odin and his ravens acted as psychopomps. Similarly, Greek mythology features Hermes Psychopompos, who escorted newly deceased souls to the underworld.

Psychopompic themes also appear in religious and spiritual practices, such as funerary rites designed to ensure a smooth transition for the departed. Some cultures incorporate offerings, prayers, or symbolic journeys to aid the soul’s passage. In modern contexts, the term is sometimes used metaphorically to describe processes of emotional or spiritual release, such as grief work or personal transformation.
