Pseudohonor is a term used to describe a false or superficial sense of honor. It refers to a rigid adherence to a set of rules or principles that are perceived as honorable, but which may not be genuinely ethical or just. Individuals or groups exhibiting pseudohonor often prioritize the appearance of honor over its substance, focusing on outward displays of loyalty, courage, or adherence to tradition, even when these actions lead to harmful or immoral outcomes.

This concept often manifests in situations where a group's internal code of conduct clashes with broader societal ethics. For example, a gang might uphold a strict code of silence, viewing betrayal of fellow members as a grave dishonor, even if those members are engaged in criminal activity. Similarly, certain historical military or aristocratic societies could exhibit pseudohonor by valuing dueling or defending family reputations through violence, regardless of the personal cost or the underlying validity of the dispute. The key characteristic of pseudohonor is that the honor system itself can be flawed, self-serving, or blind to true moral considerations, leading to actions that are considered honorable within the group but reprehensible outside of it. The pursuit of pseudohonor can perpetuate cycles of violence, injustice, and closed-mindedness, as it discourages critical self-reflection and the evolution of ethical standards.
