Proto-Assyrian is a term used in historical linguistics to describe a proposed ancestral stage in the development of the Assyrian dialects of the Akkadian language. It denotes the pre-Old Assyrian varieties believed to precede the earliest securely attested Assyrian texts and to give rise to the later Old Assyrian and other Assyrian dialects within the Akkadian family.
