Assyria
Assyria was an ancient Mesopotamian kingdom and empire centered on the upper Tigris River, with its heartland in northern Mesopotamia. Its origins trace to the city of Assur, and it later built a vast empire whose influence extended across the Near East before its collapse in the late 7th century BCE. The term “Assyrian” is used for both the kingdom and the later empire, and the people spoke Akkadian in an Assyrian dialect, written in cuneiform.
