Protesins

Protesins is not a standard term in biology. In most scientific literature the term is a misspelling of proteins. Some writers or non-scientific sources have used "protesins" as a coined term to denote a hypothetical or engineered class of biomolecules, but this use is nonstandard and not widely recognized.

Proteins are large, complex molecules that perform a broad range of functions. They are polypeptide chains composed of amino acids joined by peptide bonds. The sequence of amino acids determines structure, which in turn governs function. Proteins exhibit four levels of structural organization: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary. They act as enzymes, structural components, transporters, signaling molecules, antibodies, and regulators of metabolism, among other roles. Most proteins fold into specific three-dimensional shapes essential for their activity, a process influenced by the cellular environment and post-translational modifications.

When "protesins" is used in speculative contexts, it may refer to engineered or synthetic variants mimicking or extending protein properties. Possible interpretations include designer enzymes with altered substrate specificity, ultra-stable scaffolds for nanomaterials, or artificial polymers intended to replicate protein-like functionality. If used in this way, the term remains informal and context-dependent; it is not defined in standard biochemical nomenclature and would require explicit definition by the author or source.

Because there is no widely accepted scientific definition of protesins, readers should rely on the surrounding text to determine what is meant. In formal scientific writing, the term is typically corrected to proteins.
