Proteolytically

Proteolytically is an adverb describing an action carried out by proteolysis, the enzymatic cleavage of proteins into smaller peptides or amino acids. It is used to describe processes that proceed through proteolytic cleavage. Proteolysis is carried out by proteases, enzymes that hydrolyze peptide bonds within polypeptide chains. Proteases vary in substrate specificity and mechanism: endopeptidases cleave internal peptide bonds, exopeptidases trim terminal residues; they include serine, cysteine, aspartic, and metalloproteases among others. Proteolysis also remodels the extracellular matrix through matrix metalloproteinases and participates in hormone maturation and immune proteolysis.

In disease, dysregulated proteolysis can contribute to cancer, neurodegeneration, or inflammatory conditions; conversely, targeted proteolysis or protease inhibitors have therapeutic value.
