Proteobacterial

Proteobacteria is a major and extremely diverse phylum of Gram-negative bacteria. The term proteobacterial refers to organisms belonging to this phylum or to traits attributed to Proteobacteria. The phylum comprises several well-defined classes, including Alpha-, Beta-, Gamma-, Delta-, and Epsilonproteobacteria, as well as more recently recognized lineages such as Zetaproteobacteria. Members inhabit a wide range of environments, from soil and freshwater to marine systems and animal hosts. They are typically characterized by a Gram-negative cell envelope, but their physiology and lifestyles are highly varied.

Proteobacterial groups display a broad spectrum of metabolisms. Alphaproteobacteria include nitrogen-fixing symbionts and various plant-associated and intracellular bacteria; Betaproteobacteria encompass nitrifiers and several human pathogens; Gammaproteobacteria contain numerous medically important genera, such as Pseudomonas, Escherichia, and Salmonella, as well as environmental microbes; Deltaproteobacteria include sulfate-reducing bacteria and predatory myxobacteria; Epsilonproteobacteria include Helicobacter and Campylobacter, often microaerophilic; Zetaproteobacteria are iron-oxidizing bacteria found in marine environments. Collectively, proteobacteria participate in biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, with many members capable of opportunistic infection, plant symbiosis, or rapid adaptation to changing conditions.

Because of their diversity and abundance, proteobacterial lineages are central to ecology, industry, and medicine. The phylum includes several important human and animal pathogens as well as beneficial symbionts. Notably, the evolutionary origin of mitochondria is linked to the Alphaproteobacteria, highlighting the phylogenetic significance of proteobacterial lineages. Ongoing genomic and environmental sequencing continues to refine proteobacterial taxonomy and reveal novel taxa and metabolic capabilities.
