Proteinenheter, also known as protein subunits or protein monomers, refer to the individual polypeptide chains that assemble to form a larger, functional protein complex. Many proteins, particularly those involved in complex biological processes, are not single, continuous polypeptide chains but rather consist of multiple distinct chains. These chains are held together by various non-covalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, ionic bonds, and hydrophobic interactions, and sometimes by covalent disulfide bonds. The specific arrangement and interaction of these protein units are crucial for the protein's overall structure, function, and stability.

The number and type of protein units can vary greatly. Some proteins are composed of just two identical subunits, forming a homodimer. The term "subunit" is often used interchangeably with "unit" in this context.
