In German usage, the plural form is Protagonisten, mirroring the same concept in plural form.

Role and narrative function: The protagonist is typically the focal point for audience or reader identification. The narrative often follows the protagonist’s point of view, either in first person or through third-person limited perspective, though some works employ an external or unrestricted perspective. The protagonist’s goals, decisions, and growth shape the arc and stakes of the story. A protagonist is not required to be virtuous; many works feature anti-heroes or morally complex leads, where flawed decisions generate tension and drama.
