Protacanthopterus
Protacanthopterus is a genus name that has appeared in ichthyological literature to designate certain early ray-finned fishes linked to the protacanthopterygian lineage. The name is historical and is not consistently treated in modern taxonomic treatments. In some classifications Protacanthopterus has been retained as a valid genus for certain fossil species, while in others the species once placed in Protacanthopterus have been reassigned to other genera or left as nomen dubium. The fossil record for Protacanthopterus is fragmentary, and material consists mostly of isolated bones, teeth, and scale impressions; precise phylogenetic relationships within Protacanthopterygii remain debated.
