Propionibacter is a genus of Gram-positive, anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria are commonly found on human skin and in the gastrointestinal tract, where they are part of the normal flora. They are known for their ability to produce propionic acid as a metabolic byproduct, which gives them their name. Several species exist within the genus, with Propionibacterium acnes being one of the most well-known.

In humans, Propionibacter species are generally considered commensal, meaning they live in harmony with their host without causing disease. However, under certain conditions, P. acnes can become opportunistic. It is a significant contributor to the development of acne vulgaris, a common skin condition. In this context, the bacteria proliferate in hair follicles, leading to inflammation and the formation of pimples. Beyond acne, Propionibacter species have also been implicated in other infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems or those with medical implants.
