Propaanoni

Propaanoni, also known as acetone, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C3H6O. It is the simplest ketone, meaning it contains a carbonyl group bonded to two methyl groups. Propaanoni is a colorless, volatile liquid with a distinct, pungent odor. It is highly flammable and miscible with water and many organic solvents, making it a versatile solvent in various industrial and laboratory applications.

Naturally occurring in small amounts in plants and as a byproduct of human metabolism, propaanoni is produced industrially primarily through the cumene process. This method involves the oxidation of cumene (isopropylbenzene) to cumene hydroperoxide, which is then cleaved to produce phenol and propaanoni. Another method is the direct oxidation of propylene.

Propaanoni finds widespread use as a solvent for plastics, synthetic fibers, lacquers, paints, and varnishes. It is also a precursor in the synthesis of many other chemicals, including methyl methacrylate, a monomer used to produce acrylic glass. In medicine, it is used as an antiseptic and as a solvent for certain medications. It is also a common ingredient in nail polish removers. Due to its flammability and potential health effects from prolonged exposure, proper handling and storage are essential.
