They usually include a full-length mirror, seating, hooks or a clothes rail, and adequate lighting. Some stores offer single-occupant rooms while others use shared or modular layouts. Staff may assist by bringing items to the door or room, or by returning items to the floor if they do not fit.

In many jurisdictions, stores are expected to provide accessible rooms with wide doors, level thresholds, and seating at appropriate heights. Clear signaling shows when a room is occupied, and some stores offer privacy screens or information in multiple languages.

Clothes left in rooms may be inspected and steamed or laundered as needed; rooms and surfaces are cleaned and aired to maintain hygiene. Privacy policies typically prohibit cameras and recording inside fitting rooms.

Inventory systems may enable staff to fetch items from the sales floor, reducing congestion.
