Progesteronilla

Progesterone is a natural steroid hormone produced primarily by the ovaries after ovulation, with additional production by the placenta during pregnancy and smaller amounts by the adrenal glands. It plays a central role in female reproductive physiology, influencing the menstrual cycle, preparing the endometrium for potential implantation, and helping to sustain pregnancy by supporting the luteal phase and reducing uterine contractions.

In medicine, progesterone or its synthetic relatives is used for luteal phase support in assisted reproductive technologies, and as part of hormone replacement therapy to protect the endometrium during estrogen therapy. It is also prescribed for certain gynecological conditions associated with progesterone deficiency and to help manage irregular uterine bleeding.

Progesterone is available in several formulations, including oral micronized tablets, vaginal tablets or gels, vaginal suppositories, and intramuscular injections. Transdermal preparations are less common. The choice of formulation depends on the clinical indication and desired pharmacokinetics.

Its effects are mediated by binding to intracellular progesterone receptors, altering gene expression and exerting rapid non-genomic actions. Potential side effects include fatigue, headache, nausea, breast tenderness, and mood changes. As with any hormone therapy, clinicians consider risks and interactions with other medicines, such as enzyme-inducing drugs.

In Finnish medical usage, progesteronilla literally means “with progesterone” and is used to indicate treatment regimens that include progesterone administration.
