Profunditat

Profunditat is a Catalan noun meaning depth, the state or quality of being deep. It is used in physical, metaphorical, and technical senses. In everyday language, it denotes the vertical distance from a surface to the bottom of a body or object, such as the depth of a pool or the depth of water in a well. In scientific contexts it is measured in meters or kilometers and assessed with instruments such as depth gauges and echo-sounding equipment; bathymetry maps show the depth of oceans and seas.

In oceanography, the depth of the world’s oceans ranges from shallow coastal areas to the deepest trenches; the average ocean depth is about 3,700 meters, while the deepest points—the ocean trenches—reach roughly 11,000 meters below sea level. Similar measurements apply to lakes, rivers, and the seabed topography.

Profunditat is also used metaphorically to express complexity, significance, or intensity.
