Prodejna

Prodejna is a retail establishment where customers can purchase goods or services. The Czech term is used for physical storefronts as well as showrooms that are part of a larger business. The word derives from prodej (sale) with the suffix -na indicating a place, i.e., a place of sale.

In practice, a prodejna comprises a sales area, display fixtures, a cash desk, and usually a back room for storage. It may be standalone or located within a building such as a shopping centre, a strip mall, or an outlet of a producer. The inventory can range from groceries and textiles to electrical goods or vehicles, depending on the store's specialization. Some stores maintain a separate showroom or service counter.

Prodejna is distinguished from other terms such as obchod (shop or business) and stánek (kiosk) by emphasizing the physical retail location where consumers make purchases. An internetová prodejna (online store) refers to sales conducted online and is not a traditional prodejna.

Operation typically requires a trade license (živnost) and compliance with relevant consumer protection, labeling, warranty, return, and health and safety regulations. Food stores are subject to additional sanitary rules, while regulated goods (pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, chemicals) may have stricter requirements.
