Prioritodennäköisyys, also known as prior probability, is a fundamental concept in Bayesian statistics. It represents the degree of belief in a hypothesis before any evidence or data is taken into account. This probability is subjective and can be based on prior knowledge, expert opinion, or even a non-informative choice if no prior information is available.

In Bayesian inference, the prior probability is combined with the likelihood function, which quantifies the probability of observing the data given a specific hypothesis. This combination, using Bayes' theorem, results in the posterior probability, which represents the updated degree of belief in the hypothesis after considering the evidence. The prior acts as a starting point for the inference process. Different choices of prior can lead to different posterior probabilities, especially when the amount of data is limited. Therefore, understanding and carefully selecting the prior is crucial for the validity of Bayesian analyses. Non-informative priors are often used to minimize the influence of prior beliefs on the posterior, allowing the data to speak for itself as much as possible. Conversely, informative priors can be used to incorporate strong existing knowledge into the model.
