Prionezhsky

Prionezhsky is a historical and geographical region located in the northwestern part of Russia. It is situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Onega, bordered by the Republic of Karelia and Arkhangelsk Oblast. Historically, Prionezhsky was a county of Olonetsky Province within the Grand Duchy of Moscow.

During the Middle Ages, Prionezhsky was a major center of trade and commerce, serving as a midpoint between the Varangian and Novgorodian principalities. In the 14th century, Prionezhsky came under the rule of Novgorod Republic, only to be later conquered by the Grand Duchy of Moscow in the 15th century. Consequently, Prionezhsky was absorbed into the province system of the Russian Empire, becoming part of the Olonetsky Province.

The local area features diverse natural landscapes, including boreal forests and a variety of aquatic species within Lake Onega. Geographically, the region spans into the regions of present-day Arkhangelsk Oblast and the Republic of Karelia in Russia. Prionezhsky also has historical significance due to its connection with Russian-Wars Prioneer groups. Local identity in the area is complex, combining influences from indigenous ethnic groups and Russian control chronology.
