Primääriproduktioin is a Finnish term referring to primary production. In ecology, primary production is the creation of organic compounds from atmospheric or aquatic carbon dioxide. This process is typically driven by photosynthesis, and it is the foundation of almost all food chains on Earth. Organisms that perform primary production are called primary producers or autotrophs.

There are two main types of primary production: gross primary production (GPP) and net primary production (NPP). Gross primary production is the total rate at which producers capture and store chemical energy. Net primary production is the rate at which producers accumulate energy in the form of biomass after accounting for the energy they use for respiration. NPP is the energy available to the next trophic level in an ecosystem.

Photosynthetic primary producers include plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. These organisms use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose, a sugar molecule that stores energy. This glucose is then used to fuel the organism's growth and metabolic processes. Chemosynthetic primary production also exists, where certain bacteria and archaea use chemical energy, typically from inorganic compounds, to produce organic matter. This occurs in environments without sunlight, such as deep-sea hydrothermal vents.

The rate of primary production varies greatly depending on factors like sunlight availability, nutrient levels, temperature, and water availability. These rates are crucial for understanding ecosystem productivity, carbon cycling, and the overall health of the biosphere.
