Primärproduktionens refers to the process by which producers, primarily plants and algae, convert light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. This process forms the base of most food webs on Earth. Producers utilize sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create organic compounds, such as glucose, and release oxygen as a byproduct.

The rate at which primary producers create biomass is known as primary productivity. This can be measured in terms of energy content or mass. Gross primary productivity (GPP) represents the total amount of energy captured by producers. Net primary productivity (NPP) is the GPP minus the energy lost through respiration by the producers themselves. NPP is the amount of energy available to consumers in an ecosystem.

Factors influencing primary productivity include the availability of sunlight, water, nutrients (like nitrogen and phosphorus), and temperature. Different ecosystems have varying levels of primary productivity. For instance, tropical rainforests and coral reefs are highly productive, while deserts and deep ocean environments are less so.

Primary production is essential for all life, as it directly or indirectly provides the food and energy that sustain heterotrophic organisms, including animals and fungi. It also plays a crucial role in regulating atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and oxygen production. Changes in primary productivity can have significant cascading effects throughout an ecosystem.
