Preskriptivan

Preskriptivan is an adjective used in linguistics and language policy to describe approaches that prescribe normative rules for language use. Prescriptive language guidance seeks to define what is considered correct in grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and style, typically codified in grammars, dictionaries, grammar manuals, and official style guides. This contrasts with descriptive linguistics, which aims to describe how language is actually used by speakers without judgments about correctness.

Historically, prescriptivism has accompanied language standardization efforts, often under the auspices of academies, educational authorities, and publishers, and has influenced orthographic reforms and national language norms. In practice, prescriptive norms guide education, journalism, and formal communication, and they can help maintain shared standards across a speech community.

Critics argue that prescriptivism can repress dialects and sociolects, resist natural language change, and reflect power dynamics rather than objective correctness. In contemporary linguistics, descriptive approaches are widely valued for explaining language variation; however, prescriptive norms persist in many contexts such as school curricula and official media.

In South Slavic languages, the term preskriptivan is used to denote prescriptive or normative usage, paralleling the English term prescriptive. The concept remains central in discussions of language standardization, education, and policy, where balancing normativity with linguistic diversity is a recurring consideration.
